Sweet ATM!

For your feel good, and taste good, story of the week, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Syracuse, NY. Baker and business owner Kadesha Carter had a brick and mortar bakery business in Syracuse for 5 years. She loves to bake, but she also loves to travel, so she set out to find a way to have both baking and travel as a way of life. Carter told Syracuse.com, “I love to travel, but I love to bake. But I felt trapped running an actual bakery,” she said. “I needed to figure out a way to satisfy my creative side, make money and still be able to travel. And I think I finally figured it out.” Thinking Outside the Brick and Mortar Box Ultimately, Carter came up with the solution of having a bakery ATM – a vending machine that would dispense her homemade baked goods, including cupcakes, mini layer cakes, cookies, and brownie bites. Carter paid about $2,000 for a refrigerated vending machine and outfitted it with her business logo – Cupcakes R Me. Customers can pay for items using cash, credit card, or Apple Pay. The machine will keep baked products at a cooled temperature, enough to maintain freshness for a few days. The bakery ATM machine is located in the lobby of an office building in Syracuse. Carter stated, “I’m basically selling the products that did well in my shop, but they’re modified and repackaged to work in a vending machine. You’re not going to find a basic vanilla cupcake in my inventory.” Now, that’s a sweet idea.

Thinking Outside the ATM Box

Over the past few years there has been a dramatic increase in mobile and cashless payments. Exacerbated by the global COVID-19 pandemic, cashless payments are on the rise. As a result, ATM producers and manufacturers are thinking outside the box for ways to support the public with their financial needs in less traditional ways. One way that the traditional ATM is changing is via a Reverse ATM. Reverse ATMs have the ability to take a customer’s cash and receive a prepaid debit card in exchange. These types of ATMs are showing up at sports stadiums, casinos and cultural events. This allows a greater swath of the population to participate in events, even when they primarily conduct financial transactions by using cash. Another way that ATMs are adapting to the times is in partnership with a rather niche market. Video game terminals, used in arcades and casinos, are primarily cashless. However, video game terminals can now work in collaboration with ATMs to work in tandem. When a customer wins a game, the game terminal can provide a QR code that can be read by an ATM to allow the customer to redeem cash prizes. This allows for a more secure, seamless experience for gamers. Some other ways that ATMs can adapt to public needs are more universal. Such as the ability to pay for a meal using a self-service ATM kiosk to check out or by adding the ability to add loyalty points to a retail loyalty card via cash. While cash is still in high demand around the world, there are ways that the ATM can adapt to serve a broader range of public needs.

Number of Bitcoin ATMs continues to Rise in the U.S.

Number of Bitcoin ATMs continues to Rise in the U.S.

When Bitcoin officially launched in January 2009 it had already been introduced in a white paper written by an author going by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. According to the Bitcoin website, “Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority or banks; managing transactions and the issuing of bitcoins is carried out collectively by the network. Bitcoin is open-source; its design is public, nobody owns or controls Bitcoin and everyone can take part. Through many of its unique properties, Bitcoin allows exciting uses that could not be covered by any previous payment system.” The Bitcoin supply has maxed out at 21 million – that’s all that will ever be in existence. The relative rarity of this has made Bitcoin more and more valuable over the years. When Bitcoin was launched, its value was barely above $0. As of this writing, the value of Bitcoin is roughly $44,000, a marked increase. Bitcoin ATMs With the increase in the crypto-currency’s popularity, so comes demand. Over the past few years, Bitcoin ATMs have increasingly been installed in businesses worldwide. According to Coin ATM Radar, there are currently over 34,000 crypto-currency ATMs around the world. Bitcoin is the most popular of these crypto-currencies, and the United States holds the record for most Bitcoin ATMs, coming in at almost 31,000 Bitcoin ATM locations. California appears to have the most Bitcoin ATMs, with Los Angeles topping the chart, according to a February 2021 chart by Statista. The remaining top 10 Bitcoin ATM cities in the country include: Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Detroit, Orlando, Boston, and Newark. Retailers that are considering adding a cash ATM to their business to drive foot traffic and increase sales might be wise to also consider adding a Bitcoin ATM. With the added value of Bitcoin ATM fees and increased store patronage, retailers may find that they can add a tidy sum to their monthly bottom line.

ATM.TV Partners to Provide ATM Advertising at 7-Eleven Stores

One of the most popular convenience store chains in the country is about to experience a radical shift in how it can market to customers. 7-Eleven has reached an agreement with American Television Media Group Inc. to include digital-out-of-home (DOOH) advertising in its in-store ATMs. According to the press release, “We believe the collaboration with 7-Eleven will create invaluable opportunities for advertisers to target consumers across the single largest ATM network in the U.S,” stated Daniel Aharonoff, a digital marketing and technology veteran who is in charge of the effort.  Digital-Out-Of-Home Advertising Opportunities Aharonoff also stated, “ATM.TV’s entry into the digital-out-of-home space comes during a global pandemic that has seen many people turn to convenience stores for quick shopping trips to avoid supermarkets and big-box stores. As traditional TV viewership continues to decline and other non-traditional media vehicles have uncertain futures, the DOOH marketplace is growing rapidly to meet advertiser demand for digital media, with the added benefit of out-of-home placement.” ATM.TV is in process of vetting interested advertisers for the project, which is expected to begin by the end of the year. ATM.TV will be providing 7-Eleven stores with a software and  hardware platform to deliver advertising and content to screens that will be placed above convenience store ATMs.

Raising a Glass: Bars & Breweries in the U.S.

Sales at bars and breweries in the United States have grown exponentially over the past several decades. In 1992, drink sales of bars and breweries totaled $12.8 billion. Twenty-five years later, in 2017, drink sales had more than doubled to the tune of $28.46 billion dollars.[i] In fact, breweries alone are forecasted to bring in over $29 billion in revenue by 2022.[ii] Drinking establishments are also on the rise in America. In 2018, the number of bar and nightclub establishments in the U.S. totaled 70,382.[iii]  While the number of establishments has waxed and waned over the years, sales revenues continue to rise. All Hopped Up Breweries alone make up a fair share of the drinking establishments in the U.S. In 2018, there were 7,450 breweries in the United States. That’s a significant increase from 2012 when breweries in the U.S. were numbered at 2,475.[iv] Microbreweries numbered the most in 2018, coming in at 4,522 establishments. Brewpubs numbered 2,594 establishments in 2018, and regional craft breweries came in at 230.[v] So, who is patronizing these establishments? By and large younger adults. In 2018, the share of Americans who visited bars and nightclubs in casinos was dominated by 18-29-year-olds (53%). Americans aged 30-49 made up 48% of visitors, and those aged 50-64 came in at 35%.[vi] It’s Always Drink O’clock Somewhere With so many bars and breweries competing for their share of customers, establishments owners are needing to get creative in order to get people in the door and spending money. In addition to more traditional ways of marketing and advertising, including social media, website content, and email newsletters, bars and breweries are also creating more exciting and inviting establishments themselves. Trivia nights, happy hour buffets, and theme nights can all create buzz for a bar or brewery, resulting in more foot traffic and, hopefully, positive reviews. One other way that bars and breweries are working to create a more enticing environment is to place an in-house ATM in their establishment. By providing a bar or brewery ATM, establishment owners easily solve customer concerns about payment options. It has also been shown that cash is still readily used as a form of payment. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, “Cash continues to be the most frequently used payment instrument, representing 30 percent of all transactions and 55 percent of transactions under $10.” Additionally, customers between 18 to 25 years of age older use cash approximately 34 percent of the time to pay for transactions. Considering that the younger demographic makes up the largest number of visitors to bars and breweries, establishment owners are wise to provide easy access to cash. Great Minds Drink Alike Whether they host costume parties for Halloween or tasting events paired with carefully crafted drinks, bars and breweries are part of the social fabric of the United States. By creating a more vibrant, thoughtful, and inviting setting, bars and breweries are helping to ensure customer loyalty and their own business longevity. Buying vs. Leasing an ATM

Which Option is Right for You? To buy, or not to buy: that is the question. Businesses who would like to have an extra revenue stream do well to incorporate an ATM into their business plan. An on-site ATM that has high usage rates can earn a business an increased potential gross annual income of over $10,000. But many businesses don’t know whether they should outright buy an ATM for their location. Thankfully, there are options. Through a company like Goldstar ATM, businesses can decide for themselves whether it is in their best interest to purchase an ATM, lease one, or create a placement partnership. The differences are in the details. Buying an ATM   Up Front Costs Service Required Income Potential Buying an ATM $$$ $$ $$$   For many years the cost of an ATM was prohibitively expensive for businesses. Thankfully, over time, the cost of an ATM has gone down, while the quality of ATMs has gone up. Puloon, Genmega, Hyosung, and Triton are four of the most popular ATMs in the U.S. market. Puloon ATM has long held a highly-regarded reputation because of its quality ATM hardware. More recently, Puloon introduced two new ATMs into the U.S. market: the Sirius I and the Sirius II. For business with a more modest footprint, the Sirius I is a good option as it is the smallest ATM in its class. The Sirius II has a high level of functionality, including space for an optional barcode reader and a 15” high-resolution screen with optional touch screen. Both the Sirius I and the Sirius II have cassettes that are capable of holding up to 8,000 notes. Genmega has a good selection of ATMs available. From freestanding to wall-mounted, Genmega offers sleek, large-capacity machines for businesses who might not want to sacrifice floor space. Hyosung has recently been working to expand more into the kiosk and bank ATM markets, but they also offer a good variety of options for retail spaces. From wall-mounted to stand alone, Hyosung provides an excellent selection of ATMs that will give business owners a choice in machine for their space. Triton has a long history of ATMs in the U.S. For over three decades they have provided ATMs for the retail market. Triton’s Traverse ATM offers good quality at a reasonable cost and has become popular among owners looking to purchase an ATM for their retail spaces. While the upfront costs for outright purchasing an ATM are higher than the other options, over time that ATM will provide businesses a good return on investment (ROI). Once the ATM has been paid off, then all profits are the retailer’s to keep. Leasing an ATM   Up Front Costs Service Required Income Potential Leasing an ATM $$ $$ $$   Some business owners may not want to have the upfront costs of purchasing an ATM outright. In that case, leasing an ATM is often a good solution. The greatest advantage of leasing an ATM is that business owners will be earning income from ATM surcharge fees while they are making payments on it. Lease rates often depend on a business owner’s credit history and the length of the leasing agreement. Additionally, an ATM distribution company such as GoldStar ATM sometimes offer a deferred financing agreement for eligible business owners. Some additional advantages to leasing an ATM include: Lease payments are always the same. Business owners will always know what their monthly payments will be, which will allow for better annual budgeting. Expenses are cash deductible. Business owners can recoup their expenses each month out of the ATM operation commission. One cost that business owners will need to consider when either buying or leasing an ATM for their space is how to service and supply the ATM. GoldStar ATM offers both repair and vaulting services, which can take the hassle of maintenance and cash supply out of business’ hands. ATM Placement   Up Front Costs Service Required Income Potential ATM Placement – – $   There is another option that incorporates advantages from both of the above options, and that is creating a partnership with an Independent ATM Distributor (IAD). In this situation, business owners may be looking for a way to increase revenue but don’t want to bother with buying or leasing an ATM. Therefore, having an ATM placed in their retail space might be the best option. Installation, maintenance, and vaulting are all covered by the IAD, but the business owner receives a monthly fee or a percentage of the monthly gross earnings in exchange for providing the space for the ATM placement. Since 80% to 95% of all non-banking ATM transactions are cash withdrawals, and given that retail owners are seeing 20% to 40% of the cash dispensed stay in their stores, it makes sense for business owners to incorporate an ATM within their business footprint. With the flexibility of wall-mounted vs. stand alone, and buying vs. leasing vs. placement. Having an ATM within a retail space has never been easier – or more cost effective.

Most of these events will have dining options and other various items for purchase. While some vendors have the capacity to accept debit or credit cards, cash is still king at outdoor mobile events. Goldstar will deliver, set up, and break down the mobile event ATM so that event planners can focus on what they need to. Here are the Top 10 Mobile Events in Need of an ATM: 1. Farmers Markets Farmers markets have been a staple of the summertime experience for decades. When the weather is nice and the crops are in, people flock to summertime farmers markets to purchase fresh, local fruit and vegetables, baked goods, clothing, and other sundries. Oftentimes vendors at farmers markets don’t have the capacity to accept credit or debit cards as payment. Having a mobile ATM at a farmers market ensures that customer purchases are handled with ease. 2. Food Truck Events In the past 5 years, food trucks events have popped up in more and more urban and suburban settings. Neighborhood HOAs, community centers, and city residents have been organizing summer food truck events in greater numbers. Be it a weekly or a monthly occurrence, these events can draw quite the crowd. Considering that spending money on dining is the whole purpose of a food truck event, having a mobile ATM can greater optimize the need for cash. Since some food truck vendors don’t accept credit or debit cards, having a mobile event ATM on site will allow event goers to choose among all of the food trucks available, rather than just the ones that accept cards. 3. Beer Festivals America is quickly becoming a mecca for locally-brewed beer. Many municipalities now have annual beer festivals to highlight the micro-brews in their region. From smaller, artisan beers to larger, more widely distributed beers, breweries attend these events to gain notoriety and celebrate the world of beer. Beer tastings, food vendors, and merchandise all require payment options, and many times they don’t accept cards. A mobile event ATM will allow customers to sample tastings from breweries, purchase a bite to eat, and buy that beer stein they’ve been eyeing. 4. Street Fairs My small, suburban town has a street festival every month from May through September. There are local artists showcasing their work, food trucks to feed the crowd, beer and wine tents, and ice cream vendors, face painting, and balloon artists for the little ones. While some vendors and artists at local street fairs and festivals have the capability to accept credit card payments, many others do not. A mobile event ATM at a local street fair means more money spent on everything from a hand-blown glass bowl for Grandma’s birthday to a tricked out hot dog for dinner. 5. Concerts in the Park Summer means outdoor music events. Who doesn’t love sitting out under the starry sky listening to some talented musicians showcasing their art? Concerts in the park happen all across America, whether it’s a touring music festival or the local symphony playing Pops in the Park. A mobile ATM will allow concertgoers to pick up the latest album of their favorite A Capella group. 6. Parking Lot Carnivals Small towns and urban shopping centers often have the attitude of go big or go home when it comes to summer parking lot carnivals. These events are a right of passage for teens and young kids who love to experience the Tilt-A-Whirl, try to win the big pink elephant at the ping-pong toss, and eat bacon wrapped ice cream. But to ride the rides and play the games you’ll likely need cash. Having a mobile event ATM on site will ensure that little Johnny gets to play the ring toss and eat a chocolate covered banana and cheesy fries. 7. School Fundraisers We all know that schools these days have to do a lot of fundraising to get the capital they need to provide a well-rounded education for their students. In recent years, schools have gotten creative in their fundraising efforts. No longer are bake sales or selling Christmas wrapping paper the go-to fundraising efforts organized by Parent Teacher Associations (PTA). Larger-scale events are now frequently on the school calendar. From school carnivals to Monte Carlo nights to fancy galas, schools are doing everything they can to raise money for their kids. These mobile events most often don’t have the means to accept credit cards. Which means cash transactions are essential. PTA organizations would be smart to have a mobile event ATM available at their events. By doing so, more money will likely flow into the school’s spending coffers. 8. Flea Markets There is no deal like a good deal. Pop-up flea and antique markets can be found in urban parking lots and small-town fair grounds. With so many different vendors available, cash is likely to hold the largest share of transactions. From buying the exact same New Kids on the Block sweatshirt they had when they were a kid to Bento Boxes for their work lunch box, customers will appreciate being able to access cash to complete their whimsical or other all-important purchases. 9. County Fairs A quintessential summertime event of non-urban areas is the local county fair. These events showcase livestock, carnival rides, and Aunt Jenny’s award-winning rhubarb pie. County fairs can be easily summed up as Food, Family, and Fun. But since county fairs typically happen only once a year, the facilities they utilize
